Retaining Sovereignty

Under current international law, if Tuvalu loses its land, it loses its sovereignty. Its continued existence as a nation state – including the protection of its maritime boundaries and other entitlements – is contingent on other nations agreeing to legally recognise Tuvalu's ongoing sovereignty, with or without land.

As of November 2023, this new definition of statehood has been formally acknowledged by 25 different nations. Each acknowledgement helps protect Tuvalu's sovereignty, and therefore, its culture, its people, and its economic security.
